AT&T WIRELESS BRINGS FLAT-RATE PRICING TO CDPD DATA Taking a cue from its recently introduced Digital One-Rate calling plans, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. [T] is implementing monthly flat-rate pricing with unlimited airtime for CDPD-based wireless data. Data-savvy subscribers can choose from a pair of pricing plans: Local Unlimited, which carries a monthly rate of $54.99, plus an additional roaming fee of 5 cents per kilobyte where CDPD coverage is not available; and National Unlimited, which has a $64.99 monthly rate with no roaming charges. The latter plan is designed for frequent travelers who need wireless access to information from various locations across the country. Kendra VanderMeulen, senior vice president and general manager of the AT&T Wireless Data division, said subscribers will benefit from the company's pricing plans in three ways-"simplicity, practical solutions and value for their money. They're getting it all now at unprecedented levels." Both the Local Unlimited and National Unlimited plans are targeted at subscribers who send and receive an average of one megabyte or more of wireless information per month. CDPD rates typically are based on a variable charge for each kilobyte of data transmitted over a network. AT&T Wireless operates CDPD service in 48 U.S. markets, including New York City, the San Francisco Bay area, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver and Seattle; the company also has concluded CDPD interconnection agreements covering another 56 markets. Subscribers to either of the new pricing plans will incur a one-time $45 activation fee for each subscriber unit to which the attach a CDPD-based modem. There is a one-year minimum service term for each activated subscriber unit, AT&T Wireless said. (Brad Stevens, AT&T Wireless Services, 425/803- 4020.) |
