RIO DE JANEIRO, July 29 (AFP) - Brazilian government officials on
Wednesday applauded the sale of the national telecom giant Telebras for
close to 19 billion dollars.

The winning bids for the company's 12 holdings were 63.74 percent
higher than the minimum bid set at 11.7 billion dollars and easily
surpassed Brasilia's expectation of 13.7 billion dollars,
Communications Minister Luis Carlos Mendonca said.

Renato Guerreiro, director of the National Telecommunications Agency
(Anatel), said that the sale of just three land line holdings --
Telesp, Tele Centro Sul and Tele Norte Leste -- and the long distance
branch Embratel fetched 12 billion dollars.

Guerreiro said that some 400 government attorneys had fought off
efforts by privatization opponents to block the sale in court, and that
the auction began as scheduled at 10 a.m. (1300 GMT).

A Spanish-led consortium got the most coveted of the 12 holdings.

The consortium led by Telefonica de Espana put the winning,
4.98-billion-dollar bid for Telesp, the largest land line holding in
Brazil. Telesp covers the network in Sao Paolo state, which includes
5.6 million terminals and a waiting list of 6.7 million customers.
