I wouldn't call that "a smart decision" because it implies that AMD could have gone with an alternative decision. AMD had no choice but to stick with an off-chip cache. They would love to move to an on-die version as soon as possible, but manufacturing concerns keep them from getting there.

LOL... Doesn't the AMD's weakness you pointed above makes AMD choice of off-chip cache "a smart decision" - a decision made to bolster manufacturability and MHz while being cognizant of their weaknesses, strengths, limited resources, and their competitive position?
