PK,

I'm all for a good conspiracy theory, especially when it involves central bankers, the IMF, government, Wall St. and the public getting the shaft. :-) Come to think of it, that's not a theory!

My observation is that the superstar players like Bird, Magic, Jordan, Shaq, Miller, and a handful of others are given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fouls, walking, etc... I also believe there's a home team bias. However, I don't think the refs are trying to help major market teams win. I think it's just that the major market teams have tended to be good for the last 15 years or so and they also had most of the super stars that get the calls.

Boston is not a major market, but Bird got lots of calls that other players wouldn't have gotten.

I don't think it's fair, but I don't think it's a major market bias even if deep down the NBA likes major market finals.
