Legislative Committees Expand Children’s Health Care Coverage
A single, seamless system designed to serve children in low-income households established.
Health care professionals recognize that keeping children healthy throughout their developing years results in healthier adults. Healthy children are also more ready to learn and have a greater opportunity to become productive citizens.

Yet in Washington State there are approximately 70,000 children living in households with family income at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level who are not covered by health insurance. Legislation passed in 2005 declared the intent that all children in the state of Washington have health care coverage by 2010.

HB 1071 and SB 5093, introduced this year, direct the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to design one seamless health care coverage program for children under the age of 19 with family incomes at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, and, after January 1, 2009, to all children under 300 percent of the federal poverty level.
