There is a vague rule about history repeating itself and I see no reason to believe we've risen above it. 'Those who cannot remember the past (or who refuse to) are condemned to repeat it.' (Attributed to George Santayana) American history is replete with examples of the worst kind of religious intolerance including torture, oppression, and genocidal brutality ... usually followed by societal regret and systematic changes in law and social mores, with each generation seeming intent on reproving that cycle in one forum or another.
