>Intel did not disappoint, reporting fourth-quarter earnings of $2.13 per share, more than doubling the $0.98 per share it earned in the year-ago period. The results far exceeded Wall Street estimates, which averaged $1.84 per share, according to First Call.
The sheer strength of the Intel report led analysts to believe the rally by tech stocks could be far from over.
"Anything north of $2.10 (per share) is just a bang-out result," said Philip Orlando, chief investment officer at Value Line Asset Management.
Orlando noted the so-called "whisper" estimates -- a term referring to estimates that Wall Street insiders keep among themselves -- were hovering around $2 per share.
By surpassing even the whisper number, Intel set the stage for an extended sector rally, he said. "Today could just be the tip of the iceberg for techs."
Shares in Intel, which also declared a two-for-one stock split, rose 1/4 to 147-1/8 in heavy regular session trading. <
Does anyone have after hour nos?????
WDC, btw, blew out their nos yesterday. Price was bid up ~$3 overnight, then dropped after the open a couple points, but finished up three. WDC also ran up about ten points prior in the week in anticapation.
