First-time claims for state unemployment benefits fell a scant 1,000 in the Aug. 25 week, down from a revised 400,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said.

The new claims figure was roughly in line with Wall Street expectations. Economists had expected a rise to 394,000 from the 393,000 Labor originally reported for the Aug. 18 week.

The number of new claims for jobless benefits, which had risen sharply earlier in the year, has changed little in recent weeks, an indication that the pace of layoffs has eased, although it has stabilized at a relatively high level.
