The standards could well be sub-par yet still permit the company to achieve certification. You have to understand that one of the original reasons for ISO 900x certification was to avoid excessive product liability damage awards in Europe.

I'm not asserting that S3's decision to achieve ISO 9001 certification is a net minus, only that the importance of this decision was blown completely out of proportion in the S3 press release announcing the change.

You're right in stating that establishing these standards CAN create competitive advantage, but the same standards can also cause significant problems and/or exist as window-dressing to comply with supplier requirements.

IMO, it's too early to assess whether or not S3 will benefit from ISO certification.
