The majority of the media on TV is legally recordable for personal consumption. I can record Survivor without fear of retribution. I just can't rebroadcast it. I don't see why Shaw Cable and CBS would go to the expense to encrypt media that is legally recordable and has little to no value after the original broadcast."

Yes, Jay, you can legally record onto disk for personal, but not commercial use. And the industry is comfortable with letting you do so with Survivor or the like. But the industry is far less comfortable permitting you to do the same with a first run movie recently release in the theaters, or on video, because this is where the opportunity for commercial profit is greatest.

So a distinction must be made in this discussion between recordings onto DVD disk of shows like Survivor v. movies like The Perfect Storm shortly after their immediate release. The likelihood of your creating a market for your bootlegged Survivor DVD is much smaller than one for The Perfect Storm immediately after its release. Please appreciate this distinction.

OT. Is anybody having problems with Yahoo recently, or is it just me? I've been having problems accessing my mail, connection to newswire stories from my front page, as well as read a "select few" posts on the Yahoo thread. Anybody having the same problems. TIA
