Phil; That 15% kills the larger retail trade. Instead you buy and store via banks and never touch the stuff(unless you want to feel it)
I suspect that Kitco issues hallmarked serialed bars. However a counterfeit bar is not hard to do. What they do now is serialize them and track them as best they can. If the provenance of a bar seems suspicious they will do the ultrasound thing or cut it in half. All they lose is the melt energy and pour labor, and it is worth the risk in some buys situations.
If you make gold products you do not see the GST as it passes through. and you are retail exempt.

I used to buy gold 1 OZ bars for presents, but I stopped when they started applying GST and PST on them.
