I think that we seek a schedule of punishment that is proportionate to the offense, that the punishment of life imprisonment is appropriate for some things, but that there are offenses more heinous, circumstances more aggravated, for which it is inadequate. Therefore, we do not respond with a full measure of justice if we do not avail ourselves of the death penalty. If there were compelling reason to curtail justice, fine, but I do not think there is......
