In my case, I didn't have the funds to buy back the covered calls and my margin was already used. So, I couldn't buy back my covered calls which I have to do before selling the stock. So I got stuck and watched the stock come down, but the good side was the covered calls expired worthless and helped me. I think this is what he is faced with.
