NEW YORK Jan 10 (Reuters) - Quarterly earnings at lighting maker Acuity Brands (AYI.N) came in below Wall Street estimates and the company said its key non-residential construction market continues to be weak.

Net income rose to $24.4 million, or 56 cents per share, in the fiscal first quarter from $23.3 million, or 53 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had looked for profit of 57 cents.

Sales rose 9 percent to $425 million, matching forecasts, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Acuity said commodity cost increases would hurt its second-quarter profit, but has set a price increase that will be in effect from the end of February.

With U.S. non-residential construction expected to be flat or lower this year, the company said it saw opportunities in renovation projects, and predicted the lighting industry would return to solid growth over the next decade. (Reporting by Nick Zieminski, editing by Dave Zimmerman)
