Germany used to like us. Before the USSR collapsed, when they needed us to hold off the Russian bear. France fairly quickly discovered a way to get a free ride on national defense by pulling out of the military part of NATO, in the process screwing the US and their neighbors (something they have long been well known for) who had to take up the load they should have borne. Most of the European states, and the Brits in particular, took their NATO responsibilities seriously and manfully. (A nod goes to our Canadian neighbors here too.)

But the Cold War was an aberration in an almost natural rivalry between Europe and the US. It was caused a big and dangerous enemy, aggressive Communism.

Now we're back to the status quo and the US may expect and should prepare for more European knives in its back.
