LU Lucent Gets $5B Verizon Contract

MURRAY HILL, N.J. (AP) -- Lucent Technologies, the huge telecommunications equipment manufacturer, announced Monday
that it has received a $5 billion contract to supply the mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless.

The three-year deal calls for Murray Hill-based Lucent to provide equipment that could double Verizon's voice capacity and boost its wireless transmission rates by
as much as 10 times the current speed.

Verizon will use the equipment, designed around a wireless transmission standard called CDMA 2000, to help develop its next-generation wireless technologies.
These networks require high-speed data-networking systems to support mobile Internet sessions.
