The major players were English, I can't think of any who weren't. The colonies were ruled by Britain. And they were angry over having their rights violated by George III. They had all sorts of economic restrictions being placed upon them by George's government, which wished to use the colonies as a cash cow. And the colonists had no representation in Parlaiment to oppose this. They were being ruled by Governours chosen by London. They believed George III was trampling on their rights as free Englishmen, which dated back to the Magna Carta. They attributed his brutish rule to his German origins, since German princes knew nothing of democracy in their own lands.
