As it happens, I read "American Caesar", and one of the reasons I include MacArthur is his overlordship of Japan. And you are right, Truman was a captain under MacArthur, and there was some tension dating from that time. I still think that Truman had a point on Korea, and, in any event, he followed Churchill's lead, listened to Marshall and Kennan, gave MacArthur a pretty free hand in Japan, kept Chiang Kai- Shek afloat in Taiwan, got the UN to sign on in Korea, created NATO, and generally has to receive, I think, a great deal of credit for ensuring that the post- War world didn't go even more Communist.... |
