Meanwhile, on the automotive front...

It looks like car manufacturers will have to beef up automobile electrical systems to handle all those embedded systems:

MORE JUICE IN cars could cut fuel costs and support extra gadgets.

Philip Gott, project manager of a Standard & Poor's study of auto makers and parts suppliers, says a 42-volt electrical system should be adopted quickly to help reduce emissions and allow car makers to install more gadgets -- like electrically de-iced windshields. The current 14-volt standard has prevailed in part because the industry hasn't found a way to standardize components in a new system, Mr. Gott says.

Today's electrical systems are straining to keep up with the new gizmos available, such as electric braking and advanced navigational devices. But some European firms have been pushing for more power, says Mr. Gott. France's Renault SA says it has had a prototype with 42 volts since 1998 and expects to offer a car with higher voltage by 2004.

Mr. Gott says converting to an electrical power-steering system would lead to a 10% increase in fuel economy.
