The idealists tend to be younger people - short on experience: they march to war to fight for principle and the greater good. The old men who send them off to battle sleep soundly in their beds.

Well, FWIW, both Doris Kearns Goodwin and Robert Caro--each of whom have written extensively about LBJ--say that he did not "sleep soundly" in his bed over his decision to send young men off to war. And Robt McNamara doesn't either.

But I don't doubt that some of the loud self-proclaimed "patriots" do.
