That is certainly a true statement. It is hard to imagine that peoples who hold disparate views on important moral questions will be able to live together peacefully. Slavery was one example, but abortion is currently relevant. I do not expect most people who believe abortion is child murder to "come around" to accepting abortion on demand, or even first trimester abortion on demand. I don't expect prochoice people to give in on existing rights. This conflict will remain for years until contraception becomes much more reliable and widely used.
Similarly, rights for homosexuals, especially marriage, are going to be an issue for a long time, perhaps for ever.
Moreover, the practice of religion in public gatherings is an issue that won't go away. Soon, I expect, we must consider the abolition of chaplains in the military, in Congress, and the legislatures. (In Hawaii we have pagan religious ceremonies in school and the legislature and building dedications (we no longer bury murdered slaves in the foundation, however, so we are making progress I guess.)
