Czech Republic Hands over Gold to Slovakia

PRAGUE, May 22, 2000 -- (CTK - Czech News Agency) The Czech Republic on
May 17 handed over to Slovakia 4.12 tonnes of gold deferred since the 1992 split
of the former Czechoslovak federation, a well informed source who wished to be
unnamed told CTK on Sunday.

The Czech Republic thus met conditions laid down in the protocol on the gold
handover signed between the Czech and Slovak governments by the two
countries' premiers last November. In the document, the Czech side vowed to
hand over the gold within 7 days from the passage of the agreement on the
division of the federal property by the two countries' parliaments. The Czech
parliament passed the document on May 10 of this year, while the Slovak
parliament had ratified it on Feb 1.

Today's signing of a joint statement by Czech Premier Milos Zeman and his
Slovak counterpart Mikulas Dzurinda will put a symbolic end to the dispute, with
the latter taking over a symbolic gold brick.

The Czechs had deferred the gold in exchange for a Kc25.8bn claim which has
never been acknowledged by Slovaks. They will pay a symbolic Kc1 for the claim.
