It sounds exactly like AIDS to me. The mental dysfunction especially -- I've known a couple of people with lymphoma, none with leukemia, but the ones with lymphoma did not have brain dysfunction. Brain dysfunction typically caused by an opportunistic infection of brain tissue, which almost never happens except in severely depressed immune systems.

I think the point about the orgies is not that Arafat got AIDS then, but that he is gay or bisexual, and thus more at risk than heterosexual males for AIDS.

The long delay in diagnosis also is suggestive of AIDS. It should only take a few days to diagnose leukemia or lymphoma, at least that's what it would take here at NIH Hospital in Bethesda. It takes a few days to run the tests but an excellent diagnostician can make the call in a short time once the tests are run.

Actually a review of a bone marrow biopsy, a blood count, and a tissue typing should do it.

If they never say exactly what's wrong with him, or the diagnosis is vague, or they diagnose an opportunistic infection, that would be the clincher for me.
