Bill,

I donno about the advantages of the DEC Alpha chip over the PPC. I think its faster in integer and not necessarily faster in FPU. Probably is faster running UNIX.

DV magazine ran some interesting comparisons in the December between Duel Pentium, Mac, DEC, and SGI workstations. DV is pretty impartial, if anything Windows biased.

The results were sometimes surprising. Mostly the machines were roughly comparable. Each had decided advantages. The DECs and SGIs did not intimidate Macs or NT machines.

The main advantages to the Mac were price and Quick Time technology. At UCLA our 604 (128Mgz) PPC Macs smoke Duel Processor (200Mgz Pentium) Intergraph Machines when using video software. The main disadvantage was the limited software support for duel processor Macs.

9600 350 Mac = $5600 roughly
Cheapest WinTel = $6000+
Most Expensive WinTel = IBM $10,000
DEC = $11,000+
SGI cheapest = $5000+ (but most pros know you'd have to add a lot to this machine to make it functional)
Most Expensive SGI = your first born child+

Again, Rhapsody will be a key here since Rhapsody supposedly will scale like UNIX.
