i think it was. in this context i recommend Sam Huntington's book 'the clash of civilizations'...it makes a strong case for future conflict to most likely occur along cultural/religious fault lines. interestingly, the book was written BEFORE the war in the Balkans really got out of hand, so was somewhat prescient.
