Qualcomm's Jacobs Met With Chinese Premier,
Reuters Reports
By Ashley Gross

Beijing, Oct. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc. Chief Executive Irwin Jacobs
met on Friday with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji to discuss Qualcomm's
mobile-phone standard, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the
talks.

Telecommunications regulator Wu Jichuan and China Unicom Ltd. Chairman
Yang Xianzu attended the meeting about code division multiple access, or
CDMA, Reuters reported. Qualcomm's CDMA expands the capacity of phone
lines.

Most Chinese phone companies use the competing European wireless
standard called GSM, or global system for mobile communications, Reuters
said. Qualcomm is lobbying Chinese companies to adopt CDMA, which San
Diego-based Qualcomm says is more efficient and better suited to adapt to
high-speed Internet access, Reuters said.

China Unicom, the country's No. 2 mobile phone service operator, said last
month it will expand a recently acquired cellular network that uses the CDMA
standard.
