S Korean Cos to Set up Cdma Research Centres
in China

SEOUL, Oct 10 Asia Pulse - South Korean electronics and telecommunications firms are stepping up their entry into
China, emerging as the world's biggest market for code division multiple access (CDMA)
technology, industry sources said Tuesday.

Their moves follow Chinese leaders' recent hints that it may introduce CDMA technology into China.

If China selects CDMA as its second generation wireless communication mode through China Unicom, a 70 million-line
CDMA network will become a reality by 2004.

Samsung Electronics will work with Shanghai Bell to jointly develop a CDMA system and open a research center
Thursday in Beijing's Zhongguancun Technological Park, China's self-described ''Silicon Valley''.

LG Information and Communications (LGIC) set up a joint venture Shenzhen ZTE-LG Mobile Communications in June
with ZTE Corp., China's largest telecom equipment manufacturer.

The two partners will open a joint research and development center Thursday.

SK Telecom is also working with ZTE Corp. to design a CDMA network blueprint and has been talking technological
cooperation with China Unicom since its President Yang Xianzu visited Seoul last month.

Telson Electronics and Beijing Telecom are working to manufacture wireless communication equipment in China as well.

Kolon Data Communication is also working with ZTE Corp. to jointly develop repeaters, a main component used to
make switching systems.

Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji is expected to discuss with Korean officials bilateral cooperation for CDMA projects
on his visit to Seoul this month when he attends the third Asia-Europe Meeting, an industry source said.
