Steely Dan were freaks about sound quality in the 70's. It was especially evident on the Aja and Gaucho albums.

They were quite ahead of their time as far as that was concerned.

Most people don't know the real Elton John was the dude who was in an impossible record contract that obligated him to deliver two albums a year through the mid-70's.

The early late 60's/ early 70's stuff was genuinely great, but as his creative well ran dry, he started into the excesses that defined him for many years.
