Compaq & Motorola Form China Partnership
HONG KONG, CHINA, 2000 JUN 20 (NB) -- By Staff, IT Daily. Compaq [NYSE:CPQ] and Motorola
[NYSE:MOT] have formed a partnership to provide Compaq's Telecommunications Management
Information Platform (TeMIP) with Motorola's telecommunications offerings in China.
With TeMIP, Motorola will develop an integrated network management system (INMS), which is a
multi-vendor multi-technology network management system for CDMA (code division multiple access)
networks.
INMS can be expanded to apply to the GSM (global system for mobile communications) network and
can manage both GSM and CDMA networks in one integrated platform, allowing operators to control two
networks through one point.
Telecommunications reform programs, deregulation and soon-to-be realized globalization are increasing
pressure on telecommunications operators and network service providers, and are driving enormous
growth in the telecommunications industry.
Compaq TeMIP, a series of software products that manage telecommunications and corporate networks
- including fixed wire, mobile and cellular voice and data, as well as multi-vendor networks - has a widely
installed telecommunications management network (TMN)-compliant network and services management
base.
Separately, Compaq Computer has opened a Shanghai Telecommunications Competency Centre to help
develop Shanghai's telecommunications computing infrastructures.
Larry Schwartz, vice-president and general manager of Compaq Telecommunications, said, "By June,
1999, the country had more than 30 million mobile cellular subscribers, ranking it third in the world,
behind the US with 70 million subscribers and Japan with 43 million subscribers.
Compaq set up its telecommunications line of business in October, 1999, to develop and deliver
convergent NonStop "solutions" to the marketplace.
Compaq Telecommunications says it provides convergent IT (information technology) products that
enable global telecommunication carriers, equipment suppliers and service providers to get to market
quickly with the high-value services a customer-driven market demands.
