AT&T: @Home, Road Runner not in talks By Bloomberg News Special to CNET News.com March 26, 1999, 12:25 p.m. PT
WASHINGTON--@Home and Road Runner, two leading providers of high-speed Internet service, are not in talks to merge, AT&T president Leo Hindery said.
@Home and Road Runner provide high-speed Internet service over cable TV lines. @Home's largest shareholder is AT&T, now that the company's $59.4 billion acquisition of cable operator Tele-Communications Incorporated is complete. Road Runner is a joint venture of Time Warner, Media One Group, Microsoft, Compaq Computer, and the closely held advance/Newhouse group. @Home's shares rose earlier this week after No. 4 U.S. cable company Comcast said it will buy No. 3 MediaOne for $60 billion in stock and debt, fueling speculation that @Home may combine with Road Runner. Certainly don't see it happening in the near term," Hindery said, following a speech to the Washington Metropolitan Cable Club. It's not on the table; it's not being discussed." Hindery became chief executive of AT&T's broadband and Internet services unit after the company, the largest U.S. long distance provider, completed the TCI purchase. TCI is now part of AT&T's broadband unit. chris |
