Magnitude 8.7 Earthquake Sets Of Tsunami Alerts Across The Pacific

Story by Jonathan Belles

A major magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck early Wednesday in far eastern Russia. Tsunami alerts have been issued in parts of Alaska, Hawaii, Japan and throughout the Pacific.

The quake struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 181,000 people.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Alaska's far western Aleutian island chain while tsunami watches were issued for much of the western coast of North America, including southeastern Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California. A tsunami watch has also been issued for Hawaii.

This is a developing situation.
