The cost of the product includes disposal cost, which is a function of environmental rating.

I see: we create a master catalog:

1 liter of mercury-polluted water - $3
1 dead otter - $2.50
1 cu mile of dead ocean - market price
etc.
...then charge accordingly.

Well, it would create many new jobs, so maybe its not too bad
;-)

You're a real slippery one, lane. You seem to be working very hard to miss the point. You're making me work hard, too.

The buyer returning the product to the manufacturer for disposal is not the only one.

Didn't say it was. I said the Manufacturer retains ownership of the product, and has latitude regarding how it deals with this requirement. It may find that it can now - due to a smart redesign of the product, and a smart use of materials and smart construction - be able to refurbish it and sell it again! More profits! More jobs for refurbishers! Synergy.

Carrier corporation is now selling a cooling service ("Coolth"). It sells the client a guarantee of comfort. This is what the client really wants anyway - not custody of that that messy collection of howling metal in the attic. Carrier is free to meet this need as it sees fit. It does not put in grossly over-sized equipment - if equipment is needed. It has no profit incentive to put in grossly oversized equipment. It sometime chooses to make a building more energy-efficient thereby reducing by a large percentage the size of the equipment needed. Carrier also makes regular visits to keep the equipment tuned - because it pays the price of running the equipment and recognizes that out-of-tune equipment wastes energy. The customer gains. The environment gains. Carrier makes good money. Synergy.

OK - Now its time for you to say that carrier could some to this business model within the context of today's capitalism - if it is profitable. To which I respond by losing my temper, saying "Reread the previous post!"
