The word slave as we understand it today from our "point of reference" differs quite dramatically in many cases from what was meant by the word in the days of the OT.
It was at that time much more comparable to our understanding of "servant", who by the way, in many cases, are treadted with even less dignitity than those spoken of in the OT. Of course there were those, who even then, committed atrocitites against their servants...but never with the blessings of God, and in fact, contrary to the commands of God.
The people then were no different than are the people of today, they too broke many civil and moral codes..
