All,
If gold constitutes only 3.5 parts per billion of the earths crust, and platinum 45 parts per billion .... what would account for the greater rarity of the later? Where most metals, including gold, are found throughout the world, platinum ore is found in only a few locations.
Perhaps related to the above question: Why is that platinum will not occur in vein structures similar to gold and silver veins that result from hydrothermal mixing? It is my understanding that platinum is most often found in layers of hardened strata resulting from funnel shaped intrusions of magma into the earths upper crust.
