They are playing politics with this issue. Frankly, I don't care since both sides do the same thing - play politics on issues.

The attitude you express there sounds healthy to me. The logical way to proceed from there is to ignore the politics and look at the issues. Down there under all the politics are real issues with real points in favor and points against. It's bad enough that people play politics in the first place. But it's even worse if we react to counter the other guys' playing of politics rather than to the issues. Just because the other guys are playing politics doesn't mean that they aren't right on some of the issues. In this case there may well be aspects of the Patriot Act that need correction. We shouldn't close our minds to that just to foil their political advantage. That's not healthy.

Regarding the ACLU - I hope you are not suggesting that it is a centered organization in terms of their politics.

As for the ACLU, it has a role to play. It's role is to look out for the civil liberties of the little guy who may get steamrolled by the government machine. It's a role we need somebody to play. Doesn't mean we make it the quarterback, but we need to respect the role of the role players.
