I agree the AT&T DSL data limits are an annoyance; but they are fairly reasonable given usage patterns. I can't see any reason that a person who uses 2GB of data in a month ought to charged the same as a person who uses 200GB.

Competition, in most places, deals with these issues. I do not believe it is all about profits, however. These networks are expensive to build out and if you don't charge for the bandwidth you will have a few customers who suck up a huge portion of it. So, while I don't like the caps, I understand why you have to have them. It is far better than, for example, having the FCC telling ISPs what to do -- which invariably will end up in mis-allocation and extreme anomalies in pricing.
