Sydney, Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu said Domenic Martino, chief executive of its Australian practice, resigned because of publicity surrounding a past directorship of New Tel, a telephone company that has gone into liquidation.

He will be replaced by Lynn Odland, who will step down from his role as chairman, until a new CEO is found, the world's second largest accounting firm said on its Web site. Deputy Chairman Harley McHutchison becomes chairman. The firm said it expects to appoint a new chief executive in six months.

Martino was a director of failed Australian phone company New Tel Ltd. until he resigned in February last year, 11 months before the company went into liquidation, Deloitte said. New Tel, formed in 1991, sold A$100 million ($59 million) of shares in 1999 to fund development. It was listed in Australia and the U.S.

Martino said he quit because of ``ongoing publicity associated with his past directorship of New Tel,'' the firm said in the statement.

Deloitte in Australia won't allow its partners and employees to hold directorships in public companies any more, the firm said.
