Holcomb The Extortionist ....05.26.00

Nelson Robert Holcomb, a grad student at Colorado State University, attempted to blackmail an online retailer for money, a 2001 Volvo wagon, two digital audio players, and unlimited free downloads of the company's content. The anonymous company reported receiving 10 emails this April and May from Holcomb.

Holcomb claimed to have found a way to download digital books from the company's site for no charge. He threatened to expose the flaw if the company did not comply with his "demands". The company agreed to everything but paying Holcomb actual money. Then they received an email from Holcomb that identified himself as Rob Holcomb and gave his mailing address and work phone number. According to the papers filed by the FBI, Holcomb even used his email account with the University to say he would sign a nondisclosure agreement with the company.

Not suprisingly, Holcomb was arrested this Wednesday at his home in Fort Collins, Colorado. Holcomb's bail was set at $50,000 in federal court in Denver and the judge barred Holcomb from any Internet access and from disseminating information about the company. "If" convicted of the single charge of using the Internet to send extortion threats, Holcomb could face up to two years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Let us not forget that Holcomb is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But unless Holcomb was framed, he must be an idiot.
