Re: European Digital TV Stats - Internet to the STB Today??

Thread- What in the world am I missing here? 20 million European are going to be connected via their TV this year? I'm guessing this has to be some kind of bad typo.

Well yes it sure is. Check out this url for the actual wording of the story out of Forrester. They say, "pay TV," not Internet access over TV. Goes to show you can't believe much of what you read unless you can cross-check it against other sources. Here's the real story: forrester.com

I thought it was of general interest because this is the way the the other 50% of the USA homes could get connected to the Internet. The PC penetration seems to be halted at around the 50% level. And the connected ones are something around the 40%(or less) level. So that leaves a 60% plus of homes with no Internet access. If access can be done via their TV package, seems the connected figure might ultimately move waaay up. -MikeM(From Florida)

Web-Ready TV Will Speed European Internet Access

By David McGuire, Newsbytes

WASHINGTON, D.C. 30 Aug 2000- Most Europeans will opt to use their televisions, rather than PCs, to get connected to the Internet over the next few years, according to new study.

More than 20 million European households will use the interactive television devices to connect to the Internet this year and by 2005, 50 percent of European households will use interactive television device, according to a Forrester Research study released today.

The Forrester study, which tracked Internet access rates in England, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, found that only one in four European consumers use personal computers to access the Internet.

Since e-mail is the primary reason cited by European consumers for wanting home Internet access, interactive television companies that offer robust e-mail tools should be in a strong position to capitalize on the European trend, report authors said in a release today.

Forrester - one of the world's largest research firms focusing on Internet- related topics - surveyed 17,500 European consumers for the interactive television study.
