The much higher rates, than seems necessary to you, are used for full data support of the household(s), where other cables and even air is not an option. All multimedia incl. HD TV, phones, WLAN/Internet et al.

You can do this via fiber or alternatively via dedicated Satellites transmitting in the Ka-band using 2-way Sat data modems.
