I too have not been confident in my use or non-use of hyphens, putting them in and taking them out until the sentence looks or feels right, being too lazy to look up the usage rules and having long forgotten whatever rules the penguins tried to beat into my inattentive head oh so many years ago in elementary school.

According to that Universal Authority on Everything, Wikipedia, "A definitive collection of hyphen rules does not exist." en.wikipedia.org
No wonder we are not certain when to use them.
