I understand what you're saying about throwing them out, but most of them eventually drop our anyway, I think. I've had the same experience teaching and substitute teaching you did. Just a few kids taking up so much time from my ability to teach. That's why I've reached the point where I can say just throw them out of the school at whatever young age they show their total lack of self-discipline. Throw them out in the fifth or sixth grade when they have nothing else they can do but go to school. Wait til the tenth grade or higher and yes, they won't come back. But even then, so what. Let them try to find a job with no HS education and figure it out for themselves. I had an aquaintance once with a boy that was behind in school, constantly in trouble at school, and begging to drop out. His mother said she was terrified he was going to quit school. I suggested it might be the best thing for him since he wasn't getting anywhere in school and hated it. I think she was more embarrassed than anything else, but she let him quit. He worked at Burger King for a year, went back to school, graduated and actually completed two years at JC before joining the Marines where he really found himself.
