Here's my humble take:
GAAP (generally acepted accounted principles)
dictate that inventory is valued at the lower of
cost and market.

The write-down implies a loss of asset value,
but does not necessarily "imply that they
are giving up on selling these CPUs".

That information may appear elsewhere in the
financial statements or 10Q ,
perhaps described as "discontinued operations"
