"The rubber meets the road" was a great advertising slogan from the 60's meant to sell tires. They were damned cheap tires, and it was an awful slippery road. Firestone exploited child labour and worked its plantation workers almost to death to make just about the worst tires in history. Ply separation and rollover being some of their many endearing traits.

Wherever tires delaminate,
No matter what the load,
The wheel that's blown is Firestone
The damned things just explode
The car gyrates gymnastically
And bodies meet the road

Wherever tires are blowing,
No matter what the load,
The name that's known is Firestone
Where rubber scatters on the road

Firestone was the first company to make giant tires for mine trucks that lasted well.

Rather strange for a company that had so many complaints in its consumer tire department. At least they were superior in wear to Goodyear.
