Every time a stock gets hammered like S3 people throw out the word manipulation. It is more likely a case of an institution shopping a large block of stock. In such cases market makers will lift their B/A knowing the block will be crossed at a lower price. They do not want to be hit at higher levels - especially if they have working orders to sell stock.
