Bearded One,

it looks like you may have been a victim of classic Washington spin.

You got that right, IMO. And it's not confined to just Washington DC. I wrote to my state AG (not part of the gang of 20) about this case and received a reply, part of which is excerpted below:

I appreciate the sentiments expressed in your letter regarding the power of a free market and I share your support for successful business initiatives and the entrepreneurial spirit.

So far, so good. Continued:

Please be assured that the purpose of this office and the antitrust unit is to promote and protect competition.

A bit of Orwellian Newspeak creeps in. Perhaps substituting "incompetent competitors" for "competition" would have rendered the sentence a slightly more honest appearance. After all, "free" markets require "compulsion" and "regulation" in order for them to remain "free".

Although your views on this case differ radically from mine, I'll give you credit for recognizing political spin when you see it. Never saying what you mean or meaning what you say is an art form and a ticket to power for politicians of all stripes. And the pundits wonder why there's such cynicism and disgust among the populace towards governmental institutions these days. It ain't no mystery.

Regards, JB
