Hi all; Samsung wins contract for SDRAM based set top boxes.

Samsung set-top box wins broadcast contract in Japan
Jack Robertson, EBN, November 4, 2002
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Monday said its IP set-top box will be used exclusively in the world's first interactive digital video broadcasting service being launched this month in Japan.

Samsung received an initial $30 million contract for its SMT-F240 set-top boxes from Softbank Broadmedia, which is launching the service first in Tokyo and later will expand it throughout the country.

The IP digital broadcasting service employs ADSL broadband links to carry interactive video over the Internet. Samsung said it is negotiating to sell its IP set-top boxes to other Asian countries, as well as to company's offering broadcast services in Germany and Sweden.

So what kind of memory does the SMT-F240 use? It's easy to find out. First, it uses the National Geode CPU:

The SMT-F240, which is based on Liberate's TV Navigator 4.0 software, supports MPEG over IP-based delivery of interactive video programs. The set-top supports MPEG 2, but can be upgraded to support MPEG 4. The box incorporates National Semiconductor's x86-based Geode CPU running at 266 megahertz and uses the Linux operating system.

And the Geode? It uses SDRAM, of course:

Later Geode processors will be DDR compatible. See #reply-16520458 for a link to the press release from National Semiconductor.

P.S. Rambus investors think "set top box" and "Samsung" must mean "RDRAM", LOL. For example, see:
