No no, I mean ice dams that form on the edges of roofs on houses.......are cause by snow melting where in contact with a roof that is too warm....water runs to the edge of the roof and if temp is low, especially frigid, ie teens and below ice immediately forms and builds up creating a dam that prevents the water underneath the snow from flowing away.....result is that the water makes its way under the roof shingles and leaks into the house.... I first encountered it here about 20 years ago and we took heavy water damage that was not covered by insurance.... I learned what the mechanism was and solved the problem by reversing my louver fan and bringing frigid air into the attic thereby cooling the attic to less than 32 F...... When this situation occurs scam artists con people into various fixes, lots of people rip off their gutters, next door neighbor had his roof extended, some use heating tape along the eaves and very few understand what is happening.....
