My technique when confronted with simplistic polarizing rhetoric is to go a layer deeper and outline the actual complexity of a given situation, either analyzing it or acting to implement a solution. I especially enjoy pointing out the rhetorical games that have become so popular with the hate-talk radio hosts - assassination by anecdote, attacking straw men arguments to make an extreme alternative the only choice, etc. Sadly they are now the norm in most American political debate. Because with most people, they work. Just push the right emotional button (like the terrorists will get you or the fascist corporate vultures are bleeding us dry) and folks will suspend most critical judgement in a flash.
