DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) unveils the industry's highest density digital cross-connect which is capable of doubling a carrier's voice traffic capacity. Alcatel's 1631 SX LMC wideband digital cross-connect delivers 2,688 ports for expanded voice traffic capacity and has performance advantages that are typically found only on a traditional broadband system. These features distinguish Alcatel's 1631 as the only wideband system on the market today capable of facilitating this level of capacity and performance that carriers seek. In service since 1994 and carrying live traffic in major U.S. networks, the 1631 gives carriers the ability to service more than 900,000 voice calls. "Alcatel expanded the 1631 SX LMC to 2,688 STS-1 equivalents based on current customer and prospect discussions," said Carey Parker, Senior Director, Alcatel. "Consistently, Alcatel has received feedback requesting that wideband cross-connects demonstrate a modular architecture and an easy migration/growth path. As a result, Alcatel expanded the 1631 to a 2,688 port density which easily upgrades and offers Alcatel a significant advantage in the market place." The 1631 SX LMC enables carriers to better manage their traffic growth and significantly decrease network congestion. It minimizes the provisioning required to integrate into the customer's network and facilitates faster service deployment. In addition, the Universal Bay functionality allows for seamless upgrades and virtually eliminates compatibility issues -- a benefit that further solidifies Alcatel's competitive advantages. By providing network interfaces at signal levels up to OC-12, the 1631 performs many of the functions that were traditionally exclusive to a broadband cross-connect system. However, the increasing demand for wideband cross-connect capacity is causing wideband digital systems to emerge as the "do-all" components in the networks of many carriers. With up to 2,688 DS3-equivalent ports, the 1631 SX LMC has become the industry's "do-more" system. Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.
